Like Viola from Twelfth Night, Rosalind cross-dresses to protect herself when she's forced into exile in As You Like It. Unlike the sad, earnest Viola/Cesario, however, Rosalind/Ganymede is, to use her own word, "saucy."
Thirlwell's book traces the beloved character's literary lineage and brings together interviews with actors and directors who've brought her to life onstage. Publishers Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Library Journal, where I read about the book, have reviewed it positively.
