Sancho Panza's wisdom for the week of 1/18

For our meeting on January 21, we'll be starting Part 2 of Don Quixote, reading from the prologue through chapter 9. There are some great discussions in this section about the infelicities in Part 1, voiced from the perspectives of various characters: why does Sancho's donkey disappear and reappear without explanation? Yes, Sancho, do tell us! Why does the the novella The Man Who Was Recklessly Curious appear in the middle of Don Quixote's history? Sancho has many wonderful lines in this selection, and our "translator" pokes some fun at him.

Here's a few proverbs that Sancho shares:

• "When they give you a heifer, don't forget to bring a rope" (part 2, chapter 4, p. 483).
• "When good comes along, lock it in your house" (part 2, chapter 4, p. 483). 

In chapter 5 we overhear some banter between Sancho and his wife, Teresa Panza. She has some proverbs of her own:

• "The best sauce in the world is hunger, and since poor people have plenty of that, they always eat with great pleasure" (part 2, chapter 5, p. 486). 

Perhaps Teresa's pragmatism balances Sancho's impossible dreams?
